Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has outlined an ambitious plan to overhaul how the US central bank measures the economy, aiming to adopt real-time data and new technologies within the next 9-12 months. Speaking at a monetary policy forum in Portugal, Warsh argued that policymakers should move beyond relying primarily on government statistics that are often delayed, revised or affected by measurement issues. He said better and more timely economic information would enable the Fed to make more effective interest-rate decisions. The initiative comes as the central bank forms dedicated task forces to identify alternative data sources, while US statistical agencies are also working to improve the accuracy of key reports such as employment and inflation data following criticism over frequent revisions.
